Well, a wider tire will help with mud, but a thinner tire helps in snow and handling, also helps with hydroplaning.

I've run 10.5" wide tires for 15 years on the Jeep, performed damn good. The closest I could keep it that way when going to a 33 was an 11" wide tire. I did not want the 12.5 wide and all the headaches that come with it. 12.5 is more for looks.
