.. Interesting Quora Forum conversation on immigration. As I've pointed out often over the years, it's the far right (radical conservatives) who want open borders. It's all part of the limited government, anti-Liberal agenda. Sadly in our present age many of the corporate wing of the Dem party also have taken up this position - feed the business community all the cheap labor they want so the upper echelon can line their pockets. You can however read in the posts the realization that many people who arrive on our shores aren't the quality of person you want joining our society. Even some of these Libertarians acknowledge that government needs to take a role in evaluating each applicant - in other words, there's nothing desirable about bringing in masses of people who do not share common values and create a separate society rather than joining the host's - even expressing distain for it and it's people.

From a Liberal's point of view (and a few of the comments mention this) you don't want people coming simply to take advantage of the welfare system, or serving to create a surplus in the labor force leading to wage suppression - which then puts a burden on the welfare system, not to mention creating tension between competing groups (siding off in conflict). People complain that wages since the '70s have flattened, and why should that be a surprise when it's concurrent with relaxed immigration law and weak border enforcement - increased rate of population growth. That of, course, isn't to mention the detrimental effects on environment - another thing that conservative, anti regulation, people couldn't care less about.
