I wonder if the swimmer was wearing a dark wetsuit or rashie....

I wonder if he was in the water
than none of what he was wearing matters, sharks aren't fashionista's

Sharks are usually reluctant to grab humans preferring instead seals, birds, et cetera....

Dark no pattern wetsuits are slowly being phased out because sharks can mistakenly attack.

agreed it ups the ante
movement stimulates the appetite so when they generally see anything moving it's potential food

It isn't RARE in my state. Of course I'm fucking cranky, someone just died on my beach and you pounce in and sprout rubbish.
People die all the fucking time. It's not smart to jump out of a working plane wearing a parachute either, but people do that all the time also. It's a calculated risk, which occasionally can go wrong.

Not everyone is happy hiding in their home under a Faraday cage.

Is that you Mel? Who else would choose that avatar? Good Morning.

don't be delusional.

they eat everything... go watch This Violent World (1976) movie... they caught a shark off the coast of Sth America and besides a partially desolved young lady there was tools and other rubbish inside its guts. They're the ocean vacuume cleaners.

The Northern California coast was thick with White Sharks. Salt Water Crocs here are also a menace.

In Australia you're afraid of going to be the beach nd being attacked by a shark, a jellyfish, a saltwater croc or some poisonous fish.

In Brazoo, you have to pay attention to the favela wildlife robbing, raping or stabbing you.

I'd stick with Australia

You seem to get off referring to Americans and people from other countries as inferior to Australians but when you do it in the context of a statement that is wrong you look rather foolish and in fact set a bad example for your own country.

As stated by others on this thread, shark attacks on people are statistically rare, everywhere in the world. Things we encounter every day are much more likely main, injure or kill us including falling vending machines and we don’t give these things a second thought.

Nothing in our waters can kill you.

Except the water.

I suck at swimming. I still sink. Was at the beach this summer and my wife did a "front float". She just floated there. I did it and sank pretty quickly. Then I tried floating on my back. As expected, I sank. When I swim, I spend more energy trying to stay afloat than I do going forward.

You have low body fat. You need to relax in the water. Can you tread water?

I’ve been swimming since I was 10 months old…. But I was raised by surfer animals.

...seems like there are too many people in Brazil, Rancid. Catholicism run amok.

By any chance are there any safe areas left for a tourist to visit?

In the late 90's we had a great white kill a woman who was training to be an Olympic swimmer in the La Jolla shores area of San Diego. It bite her leg off and she bled out.

Actually it does matter. Most of the time, at least around here, if a shark attacks it is because they mistakenly thought you were a seal which is their main food source. So wearing black or brown makes it harder for the shark to tell the difference. It is a small factor but it is a factor.

I used to know one guy who wore a yellow wet suit just for that reason.

Not everything is perfect about that nice sunny Southern California weather, eh?

I get it ..but a super duper hungry water predator that sees any movement it's going for a hit
a simple aquarium with a semi aggressive fish will come up for a cricket with a force for it's size never mind a giant shark

Great whites are practically blind and they don’t like humans. Survivors of these attacks typically report being bumped in the water. Their skin is like sandpaper so then can tell what is edible.

We don't have too many people here, Joe. We have 210 million people living on an area that's bigger than the continental US.

What we have here are too many liberals and blacks. And also, too much drugs coming from places like Colombia, Peru and Bolivia. Cocaine and crack turn these people into zombies. Do you have an idea of how many blacks die because they owe like, 5 dollars to some crack dealer?

And since we live in a giving, fertile land, many live their lives careless and when hard times hit and they have no safety net due to the way they neglect their own lives, they turn to crime to solve their problems.

Capisce?

I think that is good advice, but it does not work for me. Well, at least it did not years ago in a pool. I would take a deep breath and just sink. I could swim a length of the pool at the bottom of the pool, though. I am probably better at the bottom of the pool than those freaky floating people are...they probably have to spend energy making sure they stay down...

You learn how to float for survival. I could survive for a few days as long as I had a piece of clothing to fan air into to use as a PFD. Also, floating face down saves energy… but you’ll look like a dead body lol

It is definitely something to do with my body composition. I do have more fat now than when I was younger, but I still do not float.

I can tread water, but I have to go pretty fast with my arms and legs.

I think I have dense muscle and/or heavy bones. Something that makes me heavy for my size.

I was taught "drown proofing". I sink. I do not know how deep I would sink, but I go right to the bottom at the deep end of any pool I have been in.

What is your body fat percentage?

If it’s less than 4%… that could explain it.

I think it must be significantly higher than 4%. But I really do not know.

Clearly, it’s not an issue since you can swim. Most people who can’t float drown so they don’t go in.

They are more common in Northern California.

Occasionally I've heard the odd Great White made it up to the Pacific Northwest. But it's mostly Killer Whales up here. I think they are more than a match for the sharks & would swat them down like files if they got too close. Especially their food sources.
