.. Last year...I needn't explain that I'm a river fisherman and spend a good deal of time at the rivers edge...last year while fishing I see coming toward me a mom Mallard and her ducklings. I thought sure she'd make a wide sweep out to the deeper water, but no, she passes to the upriver side and nonchalantly begins feeding around the shallow water no more than 6 to 8 feet away. Oh we're just looking for little stuff to eat, don't mind us. The ducklings too go about feeding themselves. I move a bit...they stay right with me. Cute as could be - all very nonchalant of course - just happen to want to check for food near by entirely by coincidence. Eventually they move off. 2 more days I'm in that area and again here come the ducks...just hanging. So I suspect someone must have fed them and they started associating people on the river's edge with getting free meals. See - the mom was not worried that the human would hurt her babies, certainly wasn't aggressive toward me. So close I might have reached out and picked up one of the little ones...which of course I would not presume to do, neither would I feed them. I don't think it's good that she had no fear of humans. Humans are bad - who doesn't know this? They're just protecting the babies.
. After those 3 instances I never saw them again, and worried for them.
