San Diego residents move to Mexico because of the cost of living

A lot of the disabled vets around here end up moving down there because their $1200 a month disability pay gets them nothing here but in TJ they can live a lower middle class lifestyle. Sure, they will have an apartment and an old car but they actually can make ends meet especially if they have a side hustle. If you speak English without an accent you can get some sort of telephone customer service job for $10-$12 an hour.
Again, that isn't a lot but when your rent is $300 a month, utilities are $20, and old is $35 a week? The disability plus that means a decent lifestyle with money left over to eat out or do a bit of traveling. The guy is probably only netting $30k a year all counted but the average Mexican makes maybe $1400 per month so he is easily double that. In California he'd be seen as a poverty stricken failure but there young women would consider him a good catch.

I think I saw this on this on the news 30 years ago. So Californians have been doing this for a while.
But you sure see the difference when you cross from San Diego inta Tijuana. Like going from the 1st World inta the 3rd instaneously. Not like going from Canada and Washington state which still feels like the same country.
One thing I notice is I get ill every time I ate a meal in Mexico. I think it contributed to some stomach ulcers I got in California.
It's safer to drink water or have a meal in California than it us in Mexico.

I think it's always been that way, but a lot of places that were "popular" also had jobs that would sustain middle class people and tradespeople. That's really what's changed.
