A pilot of a firefighting plane died Friday when his plane crashed while on an operation in the northeast, the first in this year's fires in Portugal so far.

Temperatures are above 40 degrees Celsius amid a heatwave in many parts of the country, while around 30,000 hectares of land have been burned.

A major wildfire that started last week in the Ourém municipality, north of Lisbon, was reignited on Tuesday due to strong winds.

The country's Civil Protection Authority said 860 people had been evacuated from several villages and around 160 people -- including at least 70 firefighters -- have needed medical treatment.

I really like Northern California & the countryside of Hawaii outside of Honolulu.

Those were my 2 favorite US states

I'm gonna go back 1 day. Maybe next year.

They don't have forests to their south, only dry Africa and because of earth's rotation, most storms head towards the US and Canada

Their average rainfall is only half of what we have here in Brazil

Actually, no. I chose Portugal because of the people and the beauty of the country. I started out in the north because it's cooler and wetter. But happenstance brought us to Central Portugal. It's not usually this dry. We are in a lush part. But this year is a very bad drought year here.

Read the op for the second half) Is because I started a thread about this and someone moved it into the "What's the weather like?" thread. I do not think catastrophic fires across multiple countries are subject matter for "How's the weather?" posts. That's insulting, really.

I started this thread in politics in anticipation of bullshit from the climate change deniers.
