I'm not sure the Squad is either - To me they seem more like out-and-out racists in the more broad sense of the term.

Americans refers to the people of the United States of America.
There are people of Central and South America, of course and they are collectively known as Central and South Americans.
I mean - when one travels to Europe or Asia, ME etc and hears the term "ugly American" do you think they are referring to Ecuadorians or Costa Ricans?
PS: People of Mexico are know as Mexicans as I understand it and people of Canada known as Canadians.
They are also North Americans as are Americans.

We are not the only Americans in this hemisphere. However, because we're United States citizens and the English language cannot accommodate the term "United Statesans", we are called Americans. We are the United States (country) of America.
Spanish is a lot more accurate, we are "Estadounidenses". I know some of the people south of the Mexican border resent us appropriating the term "American" because all of us from the most northern outpost of Canada to the most southern outpost of Tierra del Fuego are of the Americas.
They don't fully understand the limitations of English when it comes to the United States as a name for the citizens here.
