I've never been much for cats. In fact when my vision care office parking lot was being overrun by strays that were sitting on cars and meowing all day long I started trapping and relocating them.

Since moving to Greece I've grown rather fond of them, 2 of the formerly feral cats now wear collars and have indoor privileges. The rest of the group that number around a dozen with some coming and going are fed daily. Some are very friendly and crave the attention, others a bit skitterish and others still tend to bolt when they see me coming.

But the ever growing numbers of feral cats are a problem. Not only on our property but all over Greece. Sometimes Nature just has to do its thing.

This latest litter of abandoned kittens is down to 1 survivor out of 4 and I'm giving him a day or 2 at most. The crying as he lays next to his last sibling who expired during the night is heart breaking. Trying to keep him alive would require bottle feeding every few hours and a long road towards independence and let's face it, it will only add to the bigger problem.

Spay and neuter all that you can.

I am one of two people who pushed and pushed my local SPCA (I worked there part time, but in a managerial role, at the time) to change their adoption procedure from supplying a voucher to have the adopted animal spayed or neutered, to having every animal altered before they are adopted.

And after fighting for it for a couple years, we finally succeeded.

That policy has saved many, probably hundreds, if not more, lives of cats and dogs in my area.

Yes, we've been working on getting them spayed thankfully here in Greece it's very inexpensive, but there are dozens of them. And catching some of them as another matter entirely.

Here in Brazoo, animal control has pretty much been phased out.

Can't remove the strays from the streets, can't euthanize them, can't do anything to mitigate the problem

Now "community" dogs and cats are all over the place. Lots of attacks on people, property damage, people complaining they can't sleep at night. The other day I saw a meat market that was overrun by stray dogs, they were attacking the owner, trying to get the meat that was inside

Now, if you run over a dog, you have to stop, take it to the vet and pay for all the bills. If you just keep going and a camera or someone witness it, you're fucked.

And you people wonder why I refer to this goddamn 3rd world shithole as BRazoo.

I’ve pretty much orchestrated the spaying and neutering of about 35 cats in my neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods… I’d grown tired of saving kittens and seeing half eaten ones by raccoons
We have a city run program you pay $25 for an online course and you get a certificate to bring to animal control with captured cats to neuter spay for free

I see that you liked my post (and just saw your subsequent post). Not so fast. Poor thing is noticably weaker today. And cold. I put him (or her) in a cock and then in one of those small animal tents in front of a space heater on low. But it's not looking good. Besides what are the odds that I can successfully raise a kitten the size of a pinecone that can barely move. I made the mistake of giving him (or her) a name. That makes it even more personal.

Hey Weezie! You're up early. It's like dawn over where you're at, ain't it?

It's 8 am, I've been up since 7. Out the door to catch the sunrise over the Mediterranean Sea. Also my dog sits in front of me and gives me the "look" even though I've already opened the gate and he can roam the neighborhood if he wants. He prefers to go with me.

Cool. I'm getting ready to crash myself. It's midnight here. Since retirement, I sleep in until 9 or so, just like I always wanted all the years I had to drag myself out of bed at 6 or 7. You must be a natural early riser.

The kitten only takes maybe 1/8" to 1/4" of milk out of a small bottle that is maybe the size of a quarter in diameter at each feeding then turns it's head and firmly closes it's mouth so my efforts become futile at that point.

I can't imagine that quantity of milk will keep the poor thing alive and be enough to get it to regain it's strength given how weak it is, it can barely even more.

I'm giving it a version of Greek milk that's in the refrigerator, microwaved for about 6 seconds to warm it up.

As advised by my wife who had done this with other kittens although I don't know to what level of success because I never got involved before.

She's away for 10 days, she told me about the kittens before she left while saying she knows I don't want to be bothered with any of it but "they're behind the house near the water tank and they need to be bottlefed with the milk in the refrigerator every 3 hours and warmed up with a space heater if it gets cold". So that's when I got curious and looked and found the little guy.

Needs kitten meal replacement or goat milk, also as you know needs to be warm to stimulate appetite

I thought it had to be warm so they'd be more accepting of it. I don't know, that's all I got. I can make a drive to town but it's not going to happen today the shop is closed and this poor thing is barely moving and not crying much today and barely taking whatever milk I offer it. As little as I know about cats and especially few week old abandoned kittens I think I'm watching it slowly die.
