I think it would be fair to look at the average of total number of deaths in the US for 5 years before COVID and then the total numbers during 2020. Subtract one from the other (assuming COVID year is higher) and there's your number. Moving forward, I wouldnt be surprised if there was a slight drop in the number of deaths over the next 5 years because many COVID deaths were medically fragile people....so I also wouldnt assume the vaccine should get all the credit for a death rate drop. In the end, the number isnt gonna be anything like the number of dead from WW2. Thats fucking ridiculous.

Now 2018 came in at roughly 25,000 more deaths than 2017 so its fair to knock 50K off this 2020 number. Probably 525,000 people died in 2020 as a result of COVID complications. But as usual, simple numbers like this are relatively meaningless without context and it will be 5 years at least before we know what the full implications are. In fact, we dont even have the official 2020 numbers from the CDC yet.

If the 2022 numbers come in at say 2.5 million, we'll know for certain most of this uptick was mainly from people who were teetering on the brink of death and got a nudge over the edge. Of course we already have massive amounts of data showing most people who died of COVID had comorbidities galore and were in nursing homes.

Meanwhile, nothing like the Spanish Flu happened with COVID. Normal, healthy people got it and got over it.
