So if we are gonna be putting people on welfare, why dont we have them get job skills and education so they can get better jobs and work towards getting OFF rather than just fucking their whole life?
My first year in grad school, I knew a woman that was graduating that year who was a single mom as a teenager. She got pregnant as a senior with a promising academic career ahead of her. She chose to keep her baby.
However, what she did after having her baby was make better choices. She used all the available services, childcare, SNAP, WIC and all the rest while she did what? Went to jr college, then on to get her undergrad degree and eventually she was graduating with her Masters. She talked about how hard it was being a single mom and running dealing with the bureaucracy. If I remember correctly, she also worked on those campuses part-time as well.
But she did it for her child and for herself. You know what she didn't do? She didn't become an addict, she didn't stay home and watch tv all day, she didn't make excuses. She didn't have one kid after another. She never had an abortion. She never cast herself as a victim of anything.
I think having immigrant parents made her strong. Her mother was Russian (blonde blue eyed) her father was Filipino, tallish, dark and handsome. I met them at her graduation. This woman was absolutely smart and gorgeous. Flawless olive skin, beautiful slightly slanted big green eyes, willowy and feminine figure, shiny black hair...
She was also incredibly kind, interesting, funny and outgoing.
It's possible to overcome the obstacles we're presented with. It's a matter of resilience. She was resilient and an admirable figure.
