...Well, it happened. Every 5 or 6 weeks I re-treat my hiking and fishing pants with permethrin. You gotta wash em first so rather than go do a load of wash I hand washed my fishing pants. It's easy. The pants a very light weight and dry fast. They were originally hikers which I wore fishing one day and wound up catching them on my lures a couple of times, ripping the hooks out in haste - so I just made them my fishing pants. Now they have lots of holes but the material is very good at resisting the propagation of a tear so it's fine...Oh
...so today I wash them by hand, ring them out and hang them...then horror
I notice that the right butt has worn through. Is it really a problem? I always wear Speedo Jammers under there so it's not a bare ass situation, but I tend to get very attached to things like the pants. I never replace things until they are no longer useful. Now I am considering 3 options:
1) Do nothing - this is often a good option (our government should consider that rather than perpetually making matters worse). Eventually they will wear to beyond repair or usefulness.
..2) Replace them straight away with a pair of reserve hikers of the same type but less pleasing (for fishing) color.
3) Take needle and thread to them.

Recently I came aware that there is a smaller version of a favorite vintage lure (the Baby Lucky 13) - This being the Tiny Lucky 13. Received a couple in good condition from ebay today and have a bid in for another pair in very good condition. They are quite small. Upon opening the package and see how tiny they really are, I have to wonder if these won't also be good for trout though river Smallies was why I purchased them.

1)

You're fishing......plus folk might tend to leave alone more
..I'm tending in that direction, mainly because 3 would require more effort than I'm willing to make at the moment - not that that won't change. I often meet fetching young ladies when out fishing and wouldn't want to rely solely on my sophisticated good looks and charm in those situations. I am also know to be well dressed (if midgetly), so there is a point of unkempt hillbillyness that I will never be guilty of.

What’s your favourite knot? ;)
Standardly I use the Improved Clinch knot for mono (which is virtually all I use in lines).
On the odd occasions I need to direct tie a lure, say a walking bait, that needs freedom to swing side to side from the attachment point then I use a form of loop knot.
...and if joining braid to a mono or fluro, then a uni to uni knot.

That about covers my needs.
.I don't use braid these days but a palomar knot is good for tying on a lure then.

.. Today I got my first opportunity to give a Tiny Lucky a go in the very section of river I had in mind when I purchased them. Worked down a short way to that area starting from where the trail in meets the river. Caught one in the half hour it took to get there - then 7 in the next 30 minutes. Those Smallies luv luv luved that lure just as I thought they would.
. Do I know how to pick em? You betcheh.

After that short reminder of why...

.. Trolls = Idjits

Hiked in to a secluded smallish lily-pad rimmed lake today.
Short time there - 1 1/2 hr fish time.
6 LMB caught - 3 each on 5" black senko, and 4.5 inch perch Slu-Go (a lure introduced in the mid-80s which I used as successfully then as now.

Also once again spotted one of these innerestin insects:

Have you make many fly lures of your own? I used to do a bit of fly fishing back in the day. Believe it or not fly fishing is also done at sea here in Oz.

Fly fishing requires an element of finesse. I learnt to fly fish by 12 years old. Fishing is big in the family. The old man even made commercial dive and fishing boats, so I was destined to smell like fish! Lol
I was just kidding. I know it is a very peaceful and artful way to fish compared to the brutality of what I do.
. It's a good way for the elderly and physically enfeebled to go out. One day I may take it up.

It’s highly addictive. I used to wade through icy streams in the mountains back in South Africa fishing for rainbow trout. Sometimes there would be a separate little pool no more than a few feet across that I would target flick into…and Ssssssssssssssszzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…straight on! Good shit.

When I was a youngster I did have a fly rod and tying kit, but I lived on a Bass lake so I learned hardware.

Nick Creme and his wife Cosma invented the modern plastic fishing worm in 1949 while living in Akron, Ohio. Creme, a machinist who was tired of digging for earthworms as bait, experimented with different materials to create a fake worm. After many experiments, they perfected a combination of vinyl, oils, and pigments that produced a molded worm that looked and felt soft and alive, even when exposed to air over time. They called their invention the Creme Wiggle Worm, which was later renamed the Creme Scoundrel Worm.

Back in the early and mid 60s my favorite color was purple. Blue was also a good one.
I think natural and black were the other colors it came in.

"Take needle and thread to them."
I would patch them up. I do it all the time until I look like the scarecrow. Eventually they get tossed, but only after they are absolutely beyond hope. The fish don't care what you look like. If you are looking for romance on the fishing grounds, we need to talk........

I have been using plastic worms, grubs, and all sorts of weird squishy shapes on leadhead jigs for years. Right now the Fluke are ga-ga over a purple 1/2 oz Mustad ball jig. I scored a ton of pink w/gold glitter 3 and 4" grubs on Fleabay that they are constantly biting the curly tail off. Add a short squid strip and hold on!

It has been so damn hot I quit trying and instead I worked on my Firebird for a few weeks. When I finally went back the BLUES had come back. It was getting dark, I had just cleaned up the boat and put everything away, when the blues started jumping out of the water about a couple of hundred yards away. I considered getting it started up again, but I figured they would be gone by the time I did. I was right. So I went back the next evening, yesterday, and waited. This time they did not go apeshit but as I was blind casting I nailed two fatties. The third one grabbed my 2oz spoon right at the boat, looked up, saw me, said OHSHIT!, stuck his tongue out, and spit the hook. The bigger of the two had me going around the boat in circles trying to keep the line away from the prop. Once I finally swung him aboard, a bunch of cheers and clapping rang out. A boat load of tourists had been watching me the entire fight. I never even noticed.

These guys that make fun of fishing I would like to take some 50lb braid, tie it to their dicks, and hook the other end to a 10lb Bluefish. Loads of laughs! :LOL3:

So this morning I ordered a bunch. They have all kinds of fancy colors now, of course.
. Can't wait to get these. I stayed basic - Purple, blue/junebug, watermelon/red flake.
Way back then we used to fish these on open hooks, and later on the ones with weedless wire guards.
Now there are EWGs and I found lately that Texposers work nicely with senkos.
It'll be fun 60 years on using the same plastics. Look out Bass.

When I river fish in summer I get that sort of thing. Many people passing in canoes/Kayaks/rafts.
. I used to resent sharing the river with boats, but now I enjoy watching those people enjoying themselves on a nice summer's day. Young ladies in bikinis applauding when I reel one in. I always fancy they'll undo they're tops in appreciation...but....

I fished a new smallish section a couple of days ago. Had a new Abu Garcia Revo-X to try out.
. It was ridiculous. I brought in 24 in 1 hr. missed a couple and had a number of other hits w/o hookups.
I heard lots of cheers. I proudly and heroically posed, fist raised, holding my trophy for photo ops.
..no titties though. Maybe next time.

"Had a new Abu Garcia Rexo-X to try out." I only use Garcia baitcasters for bottom fishing. Lately I have been using the Black Max and Silver Max series because I need the flipping switch. [I call it the Fluking switch] It allows me to drop down into a hole or channel and be ready to set the hook fast. I especially like the older 1021 and 1022 Ambassadeurs. They are indestructible and real collectors items now.
Someone used to make a long worm with a spade shaped tail in a color they called 'motor oil'. It was deep dark green, and had gold metalflakes inside. It looked just like a marine sand worm. Fluke loved it. I think it was Mann's Jelly Worm but there were others. The 'motor oil' color was the key, and hard to find anymore.

Yeah - I use Ambassadeurs (C3) for baitcasting. Mostly older Shimanos though. I have the first ones I ever bought back in '86 which are still among my main reels for heavy work like worming in weeds and pads.
In the river I use spinning gear.

Yes - I rememeber the Mann's worms also, now that you mention.
I like the motoroil color around this time of year and ordered a small pack of the Creme...and I think some Yum senkos too.

Back when I was boat fishing the Westchester reservoirs a favorite worm in August/September was the Gillraker motoroil/orange tail.

Way back when we used to hit all the tackle shows, the best was the World Fishing Expo at Rockland Community College. We spoke to all the factory reps about the new-at-the-time graphite reels. The Abu Garcia guy had news about a fantastic new reel called the 'Polaris'. It never was called that, but instead they called it the 1021, 1022, and those were astronomically expensive for the 80's. Bass Pro Shops wanted way over $200 for them. I could buy a used car for less. They did not sell well because of that. Over a year later, it went on sale for around $100. I worked some overtime, and grabbed a 1022. I still use it today. The same design filtered down to the less expensive Ambassadeur graphite reels. Flipping switch, disengaging level wind, thumbar, pop-off side plate for fast spool change, lightweight aluminum spool, all stainless/brass/graphite construction. Over the last 10 years or so, I have been snatching them up on Fleabay at very cheap prices. Lately, they have skyrocketed. Some are going for more than when they were new. I have a drawer full and use them all the time. Even when a big Blue or Striper jumps on, they are up to it.

So what is the size actually? My reels are mostly 200 size for Bass. What line do you spool those with?

PS: These are my favorite and oldest baitcasters:

Gold.

The lower one I still use with a 5'6" medium heavy pistol grip Fenwick of the same vintage. That's my wermin setup.

I have 3 off ebay of the 251 SGs - near mint plus a spare and another for parts. Most beautiful reel ever made in MHO. I have a 21SG I won in a bidding war with some smart alek - I got it for 125$.
They were 60 bucks in '86.

The two I'm still using are my originals purchased in '86 and '87.
